I am amazed with this book. Maybe it's not that catchy on the first few chapters but the characters will just grow on you that fast and you will just enjoy the rest of the story, the rest of the book.
I'll consider it now as one of my favorites. This series is different from the other books that I've read. I cannot totally say that it can be an Urban Fiction because it is more of paranormal or alter universes, things like that, because it talks about the world divided into three: The Outer (well our world), The Archive (where the Histories are kept, like a library) and The Narrows (the place between the Archive and Outer) where can be transported by means of doors and keys. There are also titles of people that play a crucial role in the book: the Keepers, Histories, Crew, Librarians, etc. (or other people I don't know how to call them yet). So what are they? Well, for starters, we believe in souls and spirits or what will happen to us when we die.... well that where the Histories fit in and also the Archive. Histories are more like memories of what we are after we die. These memories are not stored in a book or recorded in any journal but it is stored in a body (not totally a body but yeah) called Histories. Histories are stored and being held on the Archive (like a library but there no books there) where the Librarian tried to really keep it safe and protected. They have the power to read the memories of Histories. Some Histories tried to escape from their sleep in the archive, tries to go to the Outer or mostly don't know why are they awake in the first place. So that's where the Keepers come in. They catch the Histories that woken up near their territory and deliver them back to the Archive by means of leading them to the door of Returns (an unknown shining place for them). Crew are partnered Keepers that fight with Keeper-Killers or Histories that got to the Outer. So that was mostly of it.
So that was how the world revolves with the main character - Mackenzie Bishop, 16. His grandfather which he called Da recruited her as a keeper when she was just 11 and four years after his death, she has been doing the job of a Keeper thoroughly and being under the care of Ronald (a Librarian and friend of Da who believes in her) in the Archive world. But it was terribly hard for her not to be curious with Histories and everything about her life with the Archive (which her Da and Ronald warned her not to) after her little brother Ben died a year earlier. That was a hard thing for her and her parents. And for her parents, wanting to move on and get on with life after losing Ben, that brings the three of them to move in to a mysterious and old hotel turned apartment - Coronado. There he meets a guy named - Wesley Ayers, the guylinger, who've got the same job as hers (also a Keeper!). There are also strange cases of Histories - lots of them waking up in their slumber, history of the old Coronado and the curiosity of Mac about mysteries and secrets about the Archive and the involvement of her to some Histories that may become the result of the possible crumbling and fall of the Archive.
Schwab was amazingly good in writing, I can say that. She have written a charming, fierce, loving and provoking characters which pave way to an amazing story. I love how Mackenzie's vulnerability shows even with her armor and lies but it was her fierceness and wit that makes me love her more. The first moment that Wesley was introduced, I already like him. He already made a big impact having those eyeliner, striking hair and his posing in the door toward the Narrows. Oh and everytime he makes an appearance his charm always makes it's way in my heart. I also love how the plot goes on and having a reserved stories for each of the character, making it sure that everyone introduced in the book have its reasons to be there and wasn't just for display. (ha!) The pace of the story was just right and the romance between the two main characters was just subtle and that was a good thing! I think I like you Victoria Schwab! You're that great!
