Radically speaking.....

Well, that video was a Ted talk by a brazilian CEO - Ricardo Semler. He practices a radical form of corporate democracy, rethinking everything from board meetings to how workers report their vacation days (they don’t have to). It’s a vision that rewards the wisdom of workers, promotes work-life balance — and leads to some deep insight on what work, and life, is really all about. In a nutshell, this was an inspiring talk, a moving one that I will never forget. Yes, consider watching ted talks as one of my extra curricular activities during my free time(s). I will not go into details about his talk here and how come it was awe inspiring. You can see the transcript here if you want to read it instead.

Let me share you a quick side of my story. When I was a kid, I always wanted to teach but I realized mostly it was the process of sharing knowledge to other people. When I have the opportunity to read during my high school years, I can't wait to write a book report about it, I just want to write what I felt about reading a specific book and that inflamed my desire to read more, to widen my imagination and to feel more of the characters in each book. Thesis and experimental study was stressful in a good way for me. I felt that even if there were times that it was becoming so hard to balance everything, I have lost lots of sleep and have ranted almost a thousand times, I can still feel my enthusiasm of doing it. I love the deadlines, the pressure - running around the corridor, going to places after places, looking busy and stressed - and the feel of new knowledge on the process. But knowing things a lot because of the process of researching is something joyful to me and presenting feels like rewarding because you know that you have share something that other people may not have know yet. It was a wonderful feeling and it was the feeling that I wanted to feel if given the chance to choose what I want to work at.

The thing is, here, Semler was a radical one. A CEO who have changed the system of education and work. It was of course (like what he says) a vision at first but he strives to be on the top and have act upon his vision and there you go - a wonderful difference in this world. That is something I want in life. A vision. That will surely gives you purpose huh. Well as to what is my current vision, that would be a new thing to be talked about. But we have to state the obvious now on this post. Successful people have visions. Successful people strives and do what they want. Successful people perseveres. That is something I always wanted to point out. But of course no one understands. But like what I said to myself: If other people don't get your point or doubted your point doesn't mean it's not a point, it doesn't mean that it was wrong. One of my friends says that, you've got to start from the bottom of the chain...you've got to start somewhere. I mean yeah, I understand that...but that bottom isn't in the HR Department or any offices where I would be stocked. After graduation, in the meantime, I am helping my mother here but I will not let myself be stocked. I am also in the process of doing some research and readings and learning in my own ways because that is what I wanted. Ok, will go into details about that in some other post. Doctors started at the bottom of the chain by being an intern then residency in so many years... Basketball athletes started playing basketball in their barangay or any other small places. A boxer started with nosebleeds and a swelling face. A writer started from a journal to scratch papers or writing to some student newspapers. Everyone started from the bottom, they experienced every hardships there but you see, they would not mind those hardships and will persevere because they are reaching for the top. They have a vision. And mind you, the bottom where they starting with are connected to their dreams or will simply give them so much experience for it.

My point is...I wanna be a writer, a researcher and a psychologist. And a position in the HR Department or a job in an office will not put me in the bottom of my dream. That is my opinion on that matter. I disagree with the fact that I will reach my dream if I will let myself be stock in minding those kind of jobs (well it depends if there are exceptions on the matter). If I will be stock in an office, facing a computer and encoding some SSS or employees' names, what am I doing that for? That is the question. It seems like it would only kill not only my time but also my soul and that is something I am scared of. So before everything else, before taking a step, aside from asking yourself what are you doing it for? also ask yourself what is actually your vision in life?
